How to Link Signals, Signal Clusters, Trends, and Megatrends

by Team FIBRES | Apr 28, 2021

Once you've added your first inputs into FIBRES, you'll want to create linkages between them. In this how-to guide, we'll walk you through the basics of linking items in FIBRES.

What is linking, and why do it?

Linking items together is one of the key features of FIBRES. When you create linkages between Articles, you add more structure to your data.

Through linkages, you can also visually explore your data mass via the interconnected Network view. And the human-input linkages even improve FIBRES' further automated recommendations for additional inputs and further linking.

Linking items allows you to:

Connect a higher-level phenomenon to lower-level ones in a hierarchical pattern

  • Linking a Megatrend to Trends that support it, or that may be considered being parts of the Megatrend
  • Linking a Trend to Signal Clusters that support it, or that may be e.g. be considered as different manifestations of the same top-level trend in different contexts
  • Linking a Signal Cluster to Signals that support it, or that simply are real-life examples of the higher-level phenomenon

Connect interrelated phenomena to each other also in any other way you wish

  • Link two same-level phenomena to each other (e.g.  a Signal to another, a Trend to another, etc.)
  • Link across any hierarchies (e.g. a Signal directly to a Megatrend or a Trend

Where need be, please do ask us for more best practices! As an example, depending on your scope of work, you might perhaps not wish to use all four levels of Articles in the first place. We will gladly give our recommendation based on our understanding gained from how different FIBRES customers are using the almost unlimited linking possibilities.

How to view and/or edit linkages in FIBRES?

Created linkages can be viewed in the Network view and inside the Article full view.

Viewing linkages in the Network view

The Network shows all Signal Clusters, Trends, and Megatrends in your FIBRES Account as "bubbles".

🤔  Articles not showing up in the Network? Make sure they're not marked as Signals as they are not shown on the Network as bubbles.

Viewing and editing linkages via the Article full view and the Network Builder

When you're viewing an individual Article, you can scroll down to Linked Content, and further to the Network Builder, to see and edit all its linkages.
